About the school
Sutton Valence School is a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged between 11 and 18 years. The school was founded in 1576 by William Lambe. Until 1910 it was governed by the Worshipful Compamy of Clothworkers and then became part of the United Westminster Schools Foundation, an educational charity, which now provides the governance for the school through an advisory panel of non-proprietorial governors.

In addition to a junior house and four senior houses for day pupils, the school has four boarding houses: a junior house for girls and boys in Years 7 and 8, two houses for older boys and one house
for older girls.

Since the previous inspection, a new chair of govermors has been appointed and a new Reception building with offices and meeting rooms has been completed.

What the school seeks to do
The school community is founded on the principles of trust, tolerance and openness. All pupils at the school are expected to treat each other with respect, humanity and care, becoming confident, civilised, tolerant and open-minded individuals who possess a love of learmning and a strong set of values reflecting the school's principles as a Christian Foundation.

About the pupils
Nationally standardised tests indicate the ability profile of the senior school is above average. A wide spread of abilities is represented, with almost ha If of pupils demonstrating above-average ability and I few pupils demonstrating well-above-average ability. Nationally standardised tests indicate the ability profile of the sixth form is below average. Most pupils are of White British origin and are based in the UK; a minority come from overseas including the Far East and Europe. The school has identified 202 pupils as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and provides support for a range of learmning needs including ADHD, Asperger syndrome and dyslexia. It has 3 pupils with education, health and care (EHC) plans. The school provides support for 52 pupils for whom English is
an additional language (EAL). It also offers a range of academic, sporting, art, music and drama scholarships for gifted and talented pupils.

Pupils have been inspired by the beautiful surroundings of Sutton Valence School since 1576. We are very proud of our history but we also look keenly to the future.

From the school’s opening until now, our greatest strength is our community. The relationships enjoyed between staff, pupils and parents allow us to craft an educational journey that is individually suited to every pupil.

If we feel supported, cared for and recognised for what we are, then we will feel comfortable pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zone to discover the limits of our ability – these are our primary aims.  It is only through this process that we can truly achieve.

Through the high expectations and standards we set, all our young people are encouraged and helped to go further than they had thought possible in their academic, co-curricular, community and leadership journeys.  We want them to become confident, civilised, tolerant and open-minded individuals who possess a love of learning and a strong sense of self-discipline along with a set of values reflecting our principles as a Christian Foundation.

Each will have taken a slightly different journey by the time they finish their School education, but our ultimate destinations for all are the same: that they will work hard to fulfil their true potential and add value to their lives.

All of us in the SVS community have strengths and weaknesses, but it is our unique qualities that add to the overall strength of the whole and in recognising this we uphold our ethos:  a community where each cares for all and individuality is cherished.
